Driveway Apron Paver Installation Project

Project Background & Purpose

This project began following the city's installation of a new public sidewalk along the street edge. While the city's standard default specification for driveway aprons is blacktop, an alternative approach was recommended by the Urban Forestry Technician (Public Works, Parks and Open Spaces).

To protect the mature Coastal Redwoods overhead, the arborist strongly advised against using blacktop within the trees' drip line. Permeable pavers prevent high heat absorption under the canopy and avoid sealing off oxygen and moisture from the vital root systems below. Installing pavers provides a durable transition from the street while maintaining the environmental health of the redwood canopy.

Layout & Material Specifications

  • Pattern: 45-degree Herringbone layout, providing maximum structural interlocking to withstand vehicle weight and tire turning without shifting.

  • Materials: Standard $4" \times 8"$ pavers set over a prepared sand base, backed by gravel containment.

  • Dimensions: 12 feet wide at the street edge curb line, tapering into a consistent 10-foot width for the primary apron section.

  • Total Material Scope: 880 total pavers (~195.5 sq ft) delivered across two pallets.

Project Progress & Current Status

  • Site Preparation: Gravel excavating, edge bracing, and sand bed leveling were completed prior to block placement.

  • Phase 1 Completion: The first pallet of pavers has been completely installed. The initial baseline and the widest section along the sidewalk edge are fully locked in with straight, tight joint lines.

  • Current Milestone: The project is officially 50% complete, with the second pallet on-site and ready to complete the upper half of the apron.

Operational Metrics & Pace

  • Work Rhythm: Material is transported in manageable wheelbarrow loads of ~25 pavers (~100–125 lbs) to respect physical limits and utilize cooler morning or evening work windows.

  • Base Advancement (12 ft Width): 1 wheelbarrow load (25 pavers) = 1 full diagonal course (~2.8 inches of upward progress).

  • Main Apron Advancement (10 ft Width): 1 wheelbarrow load (25 pavers) = ~1.18 diagonal courses (~3.3 inches of upward progress).

  • Project Target Length: 15 to 16 linear feet (~35 total wheelbarrow loads), satisfying the 15-foot legal apron target while utilizing the full coverage of the delivered materials.

This unlisted website was re-created in Nov. 2016 from older providers when web pages were a new thing and it was customary to have a simple family page as an introduction before "social media" was a thing.  It was shared by web link circles to introduce ourselves to our Friends in the faith world wide, old and new.

This page is a very basic introduction to our family and has had many updates as life has changed.
