~ Kathy and I hope to get back on HF  ~

After 2019 we wanted to try to get back on HF.  There was so much to do to get this done.  Here is our current progress:

Get ahold of a decent radio.

Coax run to new station location.

Lay concrete pad, and make a hinge to raise aluminum antenna tower structure.

Raise the TV mast and steady it with guy wires.

Assemble all together and...

~ HF Antenna Project ~

History

We used to have this wood antenna pole that was 26 ft tall +9 ft extension(34ft) but fell in a large storm in  Nov. 2018.    My Brother Cecil(KB7ZXH) now has our OLD Kenwood FT-DX-450  HF radio that I never could get much out of using a G5RV antenna.

Our initial new antenna ideas were were to use hardware that was contributed

We  have a contributed alum antenna tower that would be 39 ft. + rotator extension pole on our property contributed by local Friend KB7SYB.  I do not know if the rotator motor works as I do not have a controller that works with it.  I have been digging a hole for a concrete mounting block.  Ryan also has a beam antenna for it.   This tower, however requires a whopping $350 permit with building code inspections so we simplified the project.  We decided to use an antenna we could put up on a simple Rohn TV mast.  More on the Isotron Array we decided on(Retired)  See in a lower section below:

Dec. 17,2023 we bought a simpler EFHW-8010-LP and got it installed March 15, 2024.

On December 17, 2023 I bought an EFHW-8010-LP

installed March 15, 2024

I bought an EFHW-8010-LP from MyAntennas.com as only one average tuning adjustment is needed and the tuner hopefully can tune from there.  At this point I decided an EFHW-8010-LP one would be affordable and I could lower and raise one from the ground and most importantly has the best chance of getting me on the air.  I never did get the isotron working.  What is the point of having an antenna that is too complicated for me to use.  I recycled the 80-40-20-10 Isotron March 15, 2024 and got our EFHW-8010-LP installed that day.

I recycled the 80-40-20-10 Isotron array and got our EFHW-8010-LP installed March 15, 2024.

Mast and Antenna Raising

October 3, 2019.  Assembling the antenna on the mast was fun.  Once it was built life got in the way of raising the mast for a while but Earl helped me raise the antenna on October 3, 2019.  It is attached to the house with a wall mast mount to hold it straight.  Craig helped me pour the concrete Oct 5th to further anchor it in place.

I Recycled me Isotron array and got the EFHW-8010-LP installed March 15, 2024.

 Isotron antenna ~ RETIRED

We chose a ROHN H50 Telescopic Antenna Push Up TV mast and an omni-directional ISO 80/40 - 20/15/10 COMBO Band antenna.  No permit, rotator, or large beam needed.  Less guy wire needed.  No more intrusive to neighbors and city than a TV antenna.  Updated Aug. 20, 25,2019

Dec 23,2019 - The coax and mast wires need hooked up so I can extend the TV mast boom.  I am almost ready to test the band of the isotron.

November 2020 - Antenna and radio still do not work and mast not raised.   I used my Nano VNA antenna analyzer to test isotron SWR and it is terrible and I do not have the skill or energy to keep lowering and raising antenna to adjust it.

December 17, 2023 - I bought an EFHW-8010-LP from MyAntennas.com as only one adjustment is needed and the tuner hopefully can take care of the rest thus being simpler to use.

November of 2023 the IC-7300 is also still unmatched to the isotron array.  At this point I decided to purchase an EFHW-8010-LP one would be affordable and I could match more easily.   I will recycle the isotron array to make the pole lighter.   Updated Dec. 17, 2023

March 15, 2024 - I never did get the isotron working.  What is the point of having an antenna that is too complicated for me to use.  I recycled the 80-40-20-10 Isotron March 15, 2024 and got our EFHW-8010-LP installed that day.

~ Station Pictures ~

1 - A start at setting up a new ham desk. Dropped coaxes from attic in the corner.  I will continue to set up the new station as I can.  Added: File drawers,  Chair, Desk light, Office supplies/organizers, Ham books/papers.  Aug 15, 2019

3- Covered corner coax.  Moved the PC.  Hotspot on the shelf.  Got all the handhelds out for a shot.  Oct. 5, 2019

Although  I need serious practice listening to Morse code I am making slow progress at learning to send it so I purchased cool brass Bunnell AT&T Western Electric Morse Code Key  from Nationwide Radio & Eq. Sales and mounted on a 3x6 marble tile sample.  See my code key page.  Purchased Oct 5, 2019

Old wood antenna pole (no longer standing)

G5RV was sloped down from this pole.

An old QSL card we designed

On old Kenwood radio when was in bedroom.

Old Kenwood radio that never received much from while using a purchased G5RV antenna.
